The Living4Burke Foundation is a non-profit organization founded to accomplish three important goals. First, we want to make parents, coaches, school administrators, and the general public aware of the possibilities and dangers of sudden cardiac death in student athletes. Second, we will conduct free, or low-cost community screenings for children who play organized sports. Lastly, we are committed to working as hard as we can to prevent this type of tragedy from happening to another family.
The undiagnosed heart condition that Burke had is called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). If you would like to learn more about this, please visit our mission page for a more in-depth description. HCM is a treatable condition, if detected, and DOES NOT have to end the life of a child. There are many heart abnormalities that can cause a Sudden Cardiac Arrest. HCM is the leading cause of death in student athletes.
Living4Burke is in its infancy and in the process of formalizing the organization as a charitable US IRS designated 501(c)(3) foundation.
